The youth side would love to include him, but his growing involvement with senior training makes the decision far from straightforward.

Lawrence explained that Lacey usually trains with the first team and follows their daily schedule, although he still drops back to the Under 21s when needed. Minor injuries earlier in the season slowed his momentum and became the biggest obstacle following his initial integration with senior players. The coaching staff now hope he can remain fit, maintain consistent training, and continue building rhythm. The youngster already made his first team debut earlier this season during Darren Fletcher’s interim spell against Burnley. Coming off the bench, he struck the post and nearly sealed a dramatic winner. On March 20, Lacey returned to action for the Under 21 side against Reading, assisting Victor Musa for the winning goal. Lawrence noted that the winger is currently adapting to the jump from youth football to the senior environment and now trains daily with the adult squad. A left footed right winger, Lacey has drawn comparisons with Manchester City international Phil Foden due to his close control and creative instincts. Injury setbacks have been a recurring theme in Lacey’s career. After helping United Under 18s win the title in 2023, a thigh strain ruled him out of England’s Under 17 World Cup. It took nearly two years before he completed his first full 90 minutes, achieved in September 2025 during the FA Youth competition against Lincoln City. Managing his workload has therefore become a key priority.

Lawrence described Lacey as a rare talent whose technical level already ranks among elite prospects. Physically, he developed later than some peers, making long term planning essential. When in possession, he shows first team quality, yet adapting to the tempo and physical demands of senior football requires time. This period will be critical in determining whether he can establish himself permanently.

Manchester United handed Lacey his first professional contract in April 2024, a five year deal that reflected the club’s belief in his potential. Lawrence concluded that he is a player who genuinely excites everyone at the club and represents the future of the academy pathway.
